DEATH NOTE

"See you tomorrow."

"Cya."

After saying good bye to her friend, Mariko walks her usual way back her home. It was 4th of April. It was exactly 16 years ago when she was born.

"Happy birthday..." She said to herself.

It was already dark outside. She could barely see the ground by the street light. She started thinking about her past, as far as she could remember. It was like looking at the album in her head. The first few pages were blunk then one small picture of a baby. It must be the picture of herself when she was born. Next page was picture of her with her mother...smiling at each other. Then the picture of her with her friends at school. A memory about her fast love came upon her.

"Good days...”

Her life wasn't very special. She was born in the middle-class family in Tokyo. She went to the local school with her friends from primary. Now she goes to the public high school with her best friend. She is quite happy with her normal life.

when she was deeply in her mind, she felt something is behind her. something feels very close to her, but it feels very far as well at the same time.

"Oh my god... I shouldn't have watched that horror movie with Yoshiko. I can't stop imagining
that there is someone behind me."

She walked as fast as she could. But 'something' did not go away.

" I should just look back. Then I will know it was just my imagination." So she turned around.
There was nothing but the dark street with some small lights.

"hyu... that was scary." She sighed and carried on to her house. She came only few metres away from her house. But all of sudden, a shiver ran down her spine, something is back.

"Leave me alone!" she screamed in her head. She couldn't wait for it to desapear any longer. So
she turned around. But this time, there was something. It was lying on the ground without any
movements. She looked at it closely... It was a notebook.

"I didn't see this before... Did I drop this?" She picked it up. She read the word on the
notebook.

"DEATH NOTE"

She looked around but there was nobody.

"This isn't mine... how did it get here?"
She couldn't find anything written on it except from the word "DEATH NOTE" on the front page. So she decides to open the book to find out more about it.

"DEATH NOTE. how to use it..." the writings continued until the next page. It seems to be the
description of this notebook.

"The design is kinda creepy... But I'm too curious to leave it here" So she continues to read the rest as she walks home.

"The human whose name is written in this note shall..." Then she hears a voice ahead her.

"Hey birthday girl. What are you doing there? Your dad is worried about you. You told him you will be back by 9, didn't you?"

It was her brother, Masato.

"Oh hey. Yea I kinda did but forgot about it. Haha" Mariko closes the notebook and put it in her backpack.

She opened the door and her father standing in front of her not amused by her actions.

"Do you know what time it is young lady?"

"Umm... 9? (looks at the clock on the wall. It was almost 11.) Oh. it's almost 11! I always forget about the time when I'm with Yoshiko, you know... We were too busy studying."

She smiled but he didn't smile back. So she assumed that he is still upset.

"Oh C'mon, dad. We were really studying... and only talked about stuff for a while. We didn't do anything crazy to upset you. On top of that, I came home straight after I left her place"

Then he finally opened his mouth.

"You are lucky, Mariko. I won't say anything today since it is your birthday. But I'm only letting you go this time. There is no next time, understood?"

"Yes, dad. Can I please come in now?"

Mariko and her brother followed their father to the dining room. There was a lady smiling cheerfully by the kitchen.

"Mum, I'm back."

Mariko's mother looking back at her with a big smile on her face. There was a big chocolate cake on the table.

"Happy birthday, sweetie." She hugged Mariko closely to herself. "Make a wish"

"Thank you, mum." But she couldn't think of anything to wish for. (What can I wish for... hmm... Ah! I want a boyfriend before the summer festival. So i won't be lonely...) She blew her 16 candles and made a wish.

Father, mother, Masato and Mariko all set at the table and enjoyed dinner. It has been a while since the last time they had dinner together. It was the beginning of March. Masato was always out with his mates. Father was really busy with his work as a policeman. So Mariko and her mother always had dinner together without them. So Mariko and her mother was really happy to see them at the dinner.

After the dinner, Mariko went back to her room. She unpacked her backpack and took out her books and notes for the school. She looked the notebook which she found on the street. She carelessly put it on the table. Then she rechecked to make sure that she finished all of her homework with her frien

"Mariko! There is something I want to show you" Mariko's mother called from downstairs.

"OK. I'm coming." She put her stuff into her backpack quickly and run to downstairs.

The notebook was lying on the desk by the window. The window was slightly opened and the wind was coming into her room. It was spring in Japan. But it was still cold at night. The wind blew harder and shook the window. It also blew the pages of the notebook on the table. It slowly opened the heavy cover page of the book.

"DEATH NOTE. How to use it."

"The human whose name is written in this note shall die."

"This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person’s face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected."

"If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack."

The wind blew harder and shook the window. It also blew the pages of the notebook. There was something written on the corner of the paper.

"Mariko Hayashi"
